Winter Riding

Taking a bike ride in the winter is a great way to cure cabin fever by getting outside and getting your body moving. Here are some tips to help you feel confident biking in winter weather and find the joy in being outside.

One of the best things about Bluebikes is that you don't have to maintain it, we have that covered, rain (snow) or shine. To make your rides safer, more comfortable and more convenient
Bluebikes also come with:

  • Fenders
  • Front and rear lights
  • A handy basket

Now that your bike is taken care of here are a few tips for staying comfy on a winters day ride.

  • Wear layers: you'll probably warm up once you start pedaling and having a couple layers you can unzip or take off and put back on as needed makes a world of difference.
  • Remember gloves & warm socks: you'll warm up riding but that darn wind chill will still make your fingers and toes cold quick. Keeping these covered will keep the rest of you cozy too.
  • Hats: you lose a lot of heat through your head. Consider wearing a stocking cap or ball cap under your helmet to keep most of that heat in.
  • Lighten up: wear bright or light colored clothing with reflective accents to stay visible.

Low and Slow: Here are a couple things you can do to make winter riding safer and more comfortable:

  • Lower your seat height about an inch - This will lower your center of gravity, giving you better balance and stability.
  • Slow down - Going slow makes it easier to avoid obstacles and stop if needed.
  • Slushy snow won't have great traction. Proceed with caution.
  • Do your best to avoid metal plates, grates, and trolley tracks. They are extra slippery when wet and can get icy quick if the temps drop below 32 degrees.
